Stamford Brook

With this refurbishment of an end of terrace 1920’s house in Stamford Brook the client opted to dispense with a project architect (using an architect up to the Planning stage only) and to remain living in the house throughout the build.  The resulting cost-savings meant that the entire budget could be spent on the refurbishment itself.

We were happy to work in this way and with a little extra input from both our experienced project manager Steve and from the client herself, the absence of a project architect was not felt, and in many ways the client felt it a bonus, not only for the considerable cost saving but also because the direct line of communication between client and contractor meant that issues were resolved instantly and small changes could be easily accommodated. Living on site is not to be recommended in all cases, but we were happy to work with the client and managed to maintain essential services throughout.

The six month project involved the extension of the house both to the side (up to roof level) and to the rear, structural alterations at both ground floor and loft level to open up living spaces and bring what was a typical 1920’s house into the 21st century. In addition to this the house required a complete overhaul including a total re-wire, new windows and a brand new heating system throughout. Energy saving measures included the use of low energy LED lighting throughout, double-glazing and an efficient new heating system including underfloor heating to the ground floor extension and main bathroom.

The project was completed on time and under budget and the client was delighted with Acumen’s work, commenting:

“I heard about Acumen from a friend and was impressed by the fact that she regarded them so highly even after a complex and lengthy build!  They had finished her large project on time and on budget and she also mentioned the incredible aftercare and their willingness to return and sort out any problems (including those caused by the client) even now, some years after completion.

Choosing Acumen was the best possible decision. They have transformed the house and I am constantly delighted by what they have achieved.  Their team, without exception, were fantastic: polite, helpful, hard-working and a pleasure to have around. Steve my project manager was brilliant: professional, diplomatic (he spent hours soothing difficult neighbours), completely un-phased by anything I threw at him and insistent on doing the job right and to the highest possible standard. There was great communication throughout and I was always kept in the loop, and could effectively monitor costs and progress. The project was finished on time and under budget and I am delighted by the finished result.  I would not hesitate to recommend Acumen to anyone.”
